Gabrielle Heselton

Gabrielle is currently enrolled in the 2nd year of the Master of Counselling program, through the Graduate Centre for Applied Psychology at Athabasca University.  She has 20+ years of experience working with children and adults with developmental disabilities, most recently specializing in educating students with  autism. She is a teacher and earned her M.Ed. in special education from the University of Alberta in 2015, where she completed a capping project that synthesized and translated autism research into easy-to-read language, as a resource for parents. Gabrielle’s research interests center around the lived  experiences of individuals with disabilities. Specifically, she is curious about the relationship between mental health and disability, the effects of trauma and the development of resilience in children with autism, and the ableist discourses  in mental health and educational research, theories and practice. She lives in Edmonton, AB.
