Laura Gilmour is a PhD candidate in Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta and an autistic female who has the lived experience of growing up both gifted and disabled and navigating the public school system. Her current research interests focus on a disability culture/neurodiversity perspective on autism. She is currently working on a children’s book that tells the story of friendship of a girl adopted from Haiti and her adoptive cousin who is autistic and how both of these girls struggle to conform to social norms of a North American school system. Her previous research has explored sexuality and adults on the autism spectrum, virtual world use by adults with autism, and employment for adults with autism. She conducts regular guest lectures on her research and autism related topics in Edmonton area.
